  1. Worm Gobbler v1.1 - Autostart virus scanning utility

  3. Provided as unsupported Freeware. You may pass this utility on to others(only 
  4. along with this Readme file), but please call and ask Jim Kreinbrink at 
  5. (303-333-5466) before otherwise distributing (via web page, etc.). Note that
  6. we had so many inquiries about redistributing Worm Gobbler v1.0x that we now
  7. have special terms. See Worm Gobbler's About box.

  9. BY USING THE WORM GOBBLER APPLICATION, YOU AGREE TO THE TERMS OF THE LICENSE BELOW.

  12. virus. Worm Gobbler is the new name of this software; the new name should  
  13. prevent confusion with Ealy Bird, the excellent shareware reminder tool.

  15. To use the Worm Gobbler utility,
  16. 1. open your Quicktime Settings control panel (If you do not have a Quicktime
  17. Settings control panel, see the section below titled "Quicktime 2.0 users".)
  18. Select the "autoplay" popup menu. Make sure "Enable CD-ROM Autoplay" is
  19. unchecked. This will help prevent the virus from spreading. Audio Autoplay is
  20. safe.

  22. 2. Restart with Extensions off by holding down the shift key.

  24. 3. Run the Worm Gobbler Application. It will scan for and remove the virus files. 
  25.  
  26. 4. Restart. If Worm Gobbler found any virus files, be sure to mount and scan
  27. removable media. You can safely run Worm Gobbler with extensions on, since Worm
  28. Gobbler would have already deleted the evil invisible Desktop Print Spooler and
  29. Desktop Printr Spooler Extensions(Incidentally, a visible Extension named Desktop
  30. Printer Spooler is legitimate).

  32. 5. Run your favorite hard drive diagnostic software. The worm modifies
  33. information in the boot blocks of infected media Specifically, it modifies
  34. the boot block values for the clipboard name. Run Norton Disk Doctor or Apple
  35. Disk First Aid to fix.

  37. NEW! Scans your Photoshop folder!
  38. And remembers your Photoshop folder(s) between sessions! If you answer that
  39. you have more than one Photoshop folder, it will remember that fact, too. Select
  40. any folder to scan.

  42. The Worm Gobbler scanner scans for certain virus files based upon published reports
  43. of the virus. If the virus files have been renamed or if a new strain of the
  44. virus appears, Worm Gobbler will not detect it. Worm Gobbler can only be as accurate
  45. as the published reports on the virus - This is why we are releasing it as
  46. unsupported. If this utility is not working for you, simply use another one.

  48. Worm Gobbler is no substitute for a commercial Antivirus software package. Up to
  49. date virus definition files and correctly set preferences are also important. See
  50. our web page at http://www.lineaux.com for directions on setting up SAM.

  52. Quicktime 2.0 Users:
  53. If you do not have a Quicktime Settings control panel, get info on your Quicktime
  54. extension (In the System Folder, Extensions folder). Quicktime v2.0 users can be
  55. infected by the virus, and do not have an option to turn off the "CD-ROM
  56. Autoplay" mechanism the virus is using to infect. Take the time now to update
  57. your quicktime software to at least v2.5 at http://www.quicktime.apple.com, then
  58. follow the procedure outlined above.
